Sweet Charity
May 15, 2009  - By Drew Smith
Sweet Charity centers around a dance hostess who is in search of true love but who has been mistreated by too many guys.

In fact, in the first scene Charity, played by Dominique Macaso, is pushed into a lake by her boyfriend and almost drowns. Of course she is eventually rescued. The scene was actually rather comedic, drawing applause and laughter from the audience.

The plot continues as Vittorio Vidal, a famous actor played by senior Kyle Pacheco, breaks up with his girlfriend Ursula March, played by senior Loriah Mayfield.

Vittorio needs a date or he worries that he will look like a fool so by chance he hooks up with Charity hides in a closet and smokes a cigarette while Vittorio Vidal and Ursula March talk in the other room. Charity eventually leaves, still in search of a man who really cares about her.

She later becomes trapped in an elevator with Oscar Lindquist, played by Victor Davila. Oscar is terrified by the situation and is clearly claustrophobic. The scene was hilarious as Davila danced around in the elevator terrified. The audience really enjoyed this scene and responded well.

Eventually, the elevator opens and the two go their separate ways but not before Oscar asks Charity on a date. Their relationship awkwardly progresses.

Oscar is clearly not a lady’s man. Nevertheless, the couple plans to get married. After a wedding celebration Oscar tells Charity that he is breaking things off with her because he is bothered by the fact that Charity has been with so many men and he clearly has not been with many women. Sadly the two go their separate ways. The play ends on a sad note as Charity is still alone.

Of course, “Sweet Charity” is a musical and there were a few memorable songs in between the scenes that formed the plot. A number of songs were sung by the dancers who were clearly well rehearsed and who gave strong vocal performances.

In some of the songs senior Ryen Fonseca dressed in drag and even wore make-up, creating some of the funniest scenes in the play.

Dominique, who played the lead role (Charity) gave one of the most exceptional performances North’s theater has seen in years. Her voice was spot-on throughout the entire show, not to mention her accent which was entirely convincing. All of the practice and long hours spent in rehearsal really paid off.

Unfortunately, there were a few technical issues regarding microphones where the singing became inaudible or broken up. The problem was fixed shortly after it ocurred and the rest of the performance went along smoothly.

All in all, the musical did not disappoint. The actors all did a great job and all the songs were sung very well. The humor was constant throughout and the audience was always laughing and really seemed to be enjoying themselves. Five dollars well spent.
