Common visits UCR
May 15, 2009  - By William Badarak
On Saturday May 2, 2009, The Associated Students Performance Board (ASPB) of University of California, Riverside (UCR), hosted the Spring Splash event, a free concert on the grounds of the Commons at UCR.

Known for drawing premier performers, the event has included acts such as Ludacris, Lupe Fiasco, 311, Moby and N.E.R.D. The lineup included Wale, Ben Lee and Common.

The event began at around noon and continued until 6 p.m. Two stages hosted multiple performers, similar to the Heat festival of the UCR winter quarter.

Spring Splash 2009 was accented with food and vending booths, and thousands were in attendance.

While the other performers all had their merits, none compared to Common.

Common’s set included songs from old and new albums and his classic hits.

The performance was very true to Common’s album sound, and songs such as “I Used to Love H.E.R.,” “The People,” “Go,” “Come Close,” and “Universal Mind Control” appeared hardly unaltered as performed live with Common’s instrumental crew including DJ Dummy.

Perhaps Common’s most unique performance piece was his breakdown of hip-hop, where he performed bits and pieces of the most influential songs in the genre, including part of LL Cool J’s “I Need Love” and Dr. Dre’s “Nuthin’ But A ‘G’ Thang.“

Spring Splash 2009, was, as expected, an excellent event. UCR’s ASPB was able to pull together a great lineup and create a spectacular event.
