IB Theatre Show - Really?
This year’s IB Show, “Really?” was written, directed and performed by the IB Theatre class. It was composed of multiple vignettes written by various members of the class.
The first act was “Oprah,” written by seniors Christopher Martinez and Thomas Assali. The highlight of this act was by far Martinez’s impersonation of Opera, which was spot on. Assali also portrayed a convincing Dr. Phil and their catfight was hilarious.
Then came the first in a series of “Rejected IB Shows.” In this one, entitled “Blind, Mute, & Deaf,” Victor Davila, Caleb LaFontaine and Garret Tom demonstrated what would happen when you make a blind man, a mute man and a deaf man interact. What ensued was full of witty and comical moments.
“Pantomime,” written and performed by senior Ryen Fonseca, is about a man’s attempts to break out of a jail cell. This is done completely in pantomime and he attempts breaking out with various household objects before he is successful.
The next act was “Departure,” written by senior Cassandra Gomez and performed by seniors Alana Knutson, Yussef Alshalalda and Kyle Pacheco, detailed the causes of and aftermath of the death of a friend.
The next “Rejected IB Show” was “Contact Improv,” where members of the IB Theatre class formed pairs and then moved together.
Then came one of the highlights of the evening - “Diva Squad,” written by Keishon Reyes. In this act, seniors Caleb LaFontaine, Ryen Fonseca and Christopher Martinez cross-dressed as the diva squad, a crime fighting team. They were working to stop an evil scientist, played by senior Dominique Macasa. This was definitely one of the funniest acts of the night.
The next act was “Egg,” written by seniors Stephanie Treen and Jennifer Christian and junior Ashley Daltrey. This was based on an exercise that they had done in class earlier this year, where they discovered and shared an object - this time, an egg.
Next came the “Rejected IB Show” “Bad Hip Hop,” where members of the IB Theatre class made their own dance crew, similar to Static, but were purposely horrible.
The next act was “Guess What Guy is Behind Door?” by Keishon Reyes. In this act, junior Katie Lipow played the contestant on a dating game show, where she would have to choose which candidate she wanted to date without seeing him first. However, the candidates were very unlikely: Senior Alana Knutson played a girl who somehow was put there in place of a guy, senior Kyle Pacheco played a married man and Thomas Assali played a gay man.
Next, theatre teacher Michelle Grotness performed her ghost stories for the audience, which she tells every Halloween. She talked about the ghosts that live in the theatre - the sadistic farmer backstage, the cheerleader in the make-up rooms and the Italian actor in the light booth.
Then, Caleb LaFontaine and Stephanie Treen performed “Clarity,” a rap written by Jacklyn Joanino about young love. Next came “Real Good Looking Boy,” where Treen danced in a lyrical dance to that song.
The next “Rejected IB Show” was “Bad Choir” where the IB Theatre Class was a horrible choir, painful yet very entertaining. Then came “Energy Ball,” where the IB Class demonstrated another one of their theatre exercises. Following that was the highly anticipated “Inferior Beings II,” the sequel to “Inferior Beings” which was performed at last year’s IB Show. In this act, the aliens now must combat robots, both claiming to be the superior beings and the audience laughed the entire time.
The final “Rejected IB Show” was “Over Acted Movie Scenes,” in which members of the IB Theatre class cycled through various famous over acted movie scenes, such as Titanic and James Bond. This was also one of the audience favorites.
Finally came “The Accused,” which was in the one act production this year. This time, however, members of the IB Theatre class came out dressed as the theatre ghosts, scaring the audience.
