New USL officers gear up for next year
May 14, 2009  - By Iztel Vizcarra
Two weeks ago, USL, the United Student League, held the annual elections for people running to be officers of USL next year.

In order to run for positions there are requirements that must be met. Those requirements are being either a junior or senior in the following year, having no fines, having a 2.0 GPA and being able to have an open fourth period for USL.

Along with this, for the first time students running for positions were also asked to give and introduction of themselves and participate in a debate during lunch in the arcade on friday, April 24. These debates were hosted by the first year Speech and Debate Team.

Students spent a week campaigning all over classes by putting up posters, giving out candy and even posting up messages on the internet including Myspace and Facebook.

Junior Joseph Siy used some of these tactics as well, “To campaign I made a lot of big posters and I had flyers with my face on them so people knew who I was and I put them on my friends so they would spread the word.”

After all of the campaigning the current USL delivered scantrons to every classroom during fourth period to ensure that each student had a chance to vote.

The outcome of the elections is as follows: junior Lazaro Cardenas, President; sophomore Bryan Miranda , Vice President; junior Jessica Mosqueda, Secretary; junior Joseph Siy, Treasurer; junior Madisyn Norman, Director of Activities; junior Jessica Egbu, Director of Records; and juniors Angie Perez and Maxine Martinez as Co-Publicity.

All of the winning candidates have very strong goals including Siy.

“This year I heard that the a lot of people lost money because deposits were made incorrectly. I want to make sure that does not happen next year. I also want to try to make things more affordable for students. On top of it all I’m most looking forward to having fun with everyone and having a good time while getting work done,” said Siy.

Cardenas was Vice President this year and knows how things should be planned out next year. “Due to the economy a lot of things happened this year where the students’ spirits were let down. Next year I want to increase motivation and participation in the whole school starting with all of USL,” said Cardenas.

Don Gilbert, the current USL president, has given Cardenas pointers for next year. “Don has shown me how to deal with certain situations and to hold my composure and direction despite multiple obstacles,” said Cardenas.

Cardenas and the others who were elected feel ecstatic about their new jobs and are all ready to turn it up a notch for next year.
