Seniors recognized on Awards Night
June 5, 2009  - By Noreen Syed
Anxious North students awaited their opportunity to be accredited for their high school accomplishments.

The Class of 2009 seniors were acknowledged through the Senior Awards Night Ceremony which was held on May 28.

The annual event was once again held at The Park Avenue Missionary Baptist Church.

An Award Night rehearsal was held early that day in room 323. All seniors involved in the ceremony had been sent an invitation beforehand and were aware of the fact that they would be receiving awards or scholarships.

These preparations made prior to the event allowed the night of the ceremony to go smoothly.

Three scholarship recipients who received a lot of recognition the night of the award ceremony were Asael Flores, Paula Lacson, and Ping Quach. Flores received around $300000 to be used in his education at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

After being a prominent recipient for various scholarships senior Paula Lacson said, “It’s a good feeling to have all my hard work pay off. It’s nice to get the recognition especially after being involved with IB diploma, track and choir.”

Lacson’s advice to other students was that they also get involved in extracurricular activities as it helped her receive so many scholarships.

One trademark of Senior Awards Night is the raffle which names recipients of the Singh Chevrolet Excellent Attendance Award. The raffle allowed two seniors an opportunity to win either a $1000 scholarship or a free laptop computer.

However the presenter did recognize that in the past the raffle provided the winning seniors with a free car. The current economic state limited them to smaller prizes this year.

“It is going to be a lot of help in college and it would have been tough without it because it’s the only scholarship I have so far. I needed it and it’s really helpful,” said senior Courttney Moxley after winning the $1000 scholarship in the raffle.

Meanwhile senior Andreea Tanase expressed her excitement over winning the free laptop computer as she said, “I’ve wanted a laptop and I really needed one for college. I feel really thankful and surprised because I never expected to win anything.”

With non-profit organizations like the National Merit Scholar providing 50000 students with grants and scholarships people have a lot of opportunities to gain support in paying off their college tuition. For many students the awards are more than just sheets of paper since they represent years of intense studying and many sleepless nights.

Aside from commemorating the achievements of the very talented pool of students, this night is also significant in representing North as a prospering high school.

The Awards Night honored students of various backgrounds and areas of focus who were inspired to go out and dedicate much of their time to receive scholarships or to be distinguished members of their graduating class.
