On May 26, members of North’s faculty faced off against Power 106 radio station in the Black Student Union’s All-Star Celebrity Basketball game.
The purpose of this widely-anticipated event was to fundraise for the BSU and events that they plan to hold in the next school year. However the game showed success in not only being a great money-making tactic, but also as a way to bond.
“Usually, we don’t have that much participation in BSU. Not many people come to meetings, but towards the end, a lot of people came and helped. We all had our shirts on and it just seemed like we were together, finally!” said BSU president and senior, Arin Dear-Walker.
On the Friday prior to the big game, Power 106 paid a visit to North’s arcade during lunch to raise both awareness and anticipation for the upcoming All-Star game.
With the help of BSU, their tactics seemed to have an effect on the students as Tuesday's game resulted in a large number of supporting students, staff and parents to cheer for the team.
Students arrived with signs and t-shirts to support their teachers and team.
“It was spectacular. Even though it took a lot to prepare for it, it turned out to be really good. I had a lot of fun,” said Dear-Walker.
Led by chemistry teacher and team captain Rolland Fezzey, a team composed of twelve others made up North’s players for this event.
The game began at 7 P.M. Excitement grew as one of the basketball hoops was broken in the start of the second quarter of the game when a member of Power 106’s team dunked the ball.
This high point of the event attracted the attention of many students, staff and guests alike, who all crowded around the dangling hoop and shattered glass of the backboard to take pictures.
The rest of the game was played half-court, though this did not cause any change in the enthusiasm of the crowd.
“When we first planned it, we didn’t think anybody would come. Tickets weren’t selling and we were a little scared… A lot of people showed up, and it was just incredible. I had never seen the gym that packed except on assembly days.”
Prizes and freebies were thrown out into the cheering crowds by Power 106’s DJs and celebrity guests performed.
Rising stars, The New Boyz, were a hit among the audience as they performed “You’re a Jerk” in the halftime show and signed autographs at the end of the game.
The basketball game ended with North’s loss with a score of 56-62. Despite our defeat, this event was a perfect end of the year reminder of our school’s spirit and pride.
“It was a hard fought game but we fell a bit short. We’ll get them next time!” said Fezzey.
