North’s very own track and field coach, Charles Leathers, is due to make yet a second retirement this year. This time, it's for good.
A source of guidance for the runners who received countless CIF victories, Leathers plans to retire after eighteen years of coaching at North. Former coach to some well known names in track and field, such as Olympic gold-medalist, Joanna Hayes, Leathers is well-liked and respected by many.
“[The youngsters] have respect and I think that the respect was both ways-kids to adults, adults to kids,” said Leathers.
Many expressed their sadness in the loss of a great coach. Senior Marjanie Maldonado said, “It will be harder for the younger ones without Coach Leathers’ push...Everyone is going to miss him...He’s like a legend.”
“North has been good to me. When I’m in my rocking chair... I’ll always remember the J-Dub,” said the coach with a smile.
